Conad born in Bologna in 1962, it is a cooperative company active in large-scale distribution, and in the same year 1962 the National Retail Consortium was established in Bologna, a limited liability cooperative company. There are 14 buying groups to which 420 retail partners belong. In the 1970s Conad was present in all Italian regions and reached the largest number of associates in its history: 196 groups and 19,471 retailers. In the 80s, the big leap, in the year of the twentieth anniversary, with about 200 superettes and supermarkets, Conad is at the very first places in Italy in the modern network. a quality offer focused on fresh products. The evolution of branded products continues, tripled in just three years: quality control processes have been enhanced, nutritional labels have been added and the packaging logo has changed. The first alliance policies between distributors are developed: in 1993 Conad, together with Sigma and Conitcoop, set up Sicon which represents a 7.5 per cent market share. Seven years later, the alliance between Conad and Coop will give birth to Italia Distribuzione, a common trading center with the brand industry. A new guarantee brand is born Conad Quality Path, affixed to fruit and vegetables and meat produced and controlled at all stages of the supply chain according to specific Conad guidelines. In 2001 the new line Flavors & Surroundings Conad is the first private retail brand to enhance typical Italian products.
